Students, staff of Red Deer Public Schools to recognize NDTR on Tuesday

Red Deer Public Schools says students and staff will recognize National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on Sept. 29.

That day they will come together to commemorate the day through learning, reflection and activities that honour the experiences of the First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples.

The Division reports that all 22 schools will participate in activities connected to truth and reconciliation through classroom lessons, discussions, art projects and other learning opportunities, including wearing orange shirts.

“Truth and reconciliation is something we need to continue learning about together,” said Hayley Christen, Learning Services Coordinator with Red Deer Public Schools. “September 29 gives us an important opportunity to make space for these conversations in our schools, to listen and learn from Indigenous perspectives, and to help students understand why reconciliation matters. This learning is not limited to September 29; it is part of the work we continue throughout the school year.”

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, held on September 30, honours First Nations, Inuit and Métis children who never returned home from residential schools, as well as survivors, their families and communities.

It also provides an important opportunity to reflect on the history and legacy of residential schools and the ongoing work of reconciliation.

Orange Shirt Day is also held that day and tells the story of Phyllis Webstad and her experience of having her new orange shirt taken away on her first day at a residential school.

“Our responsibility is to ensure students have opportunities to understand the history of our country, hear Indigenous voices and perspectives and build an understanding of what reconciliation can look like in their own lives and communities,” said Heather Steele, Learning Services Coordinator with Red Deer Public Schools. “This is important work for all of us and is reflected in learning taking place across our Division.”
