In the first period, Rebels forward Patrick Sopiarz opened the scoring for the Rebels near the midway point of the opening frame.

Defenceman Jiri Kamas played the puck up the ice to Hamilton, who carried it into the offensive zone. Hamilton then made a no-look feed to Sopiarz, who scored after he made a move to his backhand.

The Tigers tied the game with just under seven minutes left in the second period while on the penalty kill. Forward Liam Ruck somehow got in behind the defence and was fed the puck to spring a breakaway attempt. He made no mistake to earn his first of the season.

In the third period, Hamilton scored his fourth goal in two games to give the Rebels a 2-1 lead.

With 5:53 left in the game, Hamilton beat the Tigers’ defence using his speed on the offensive rush and scored following a nifty move.

Red Deer then sealed the deal with 2:37 to go.

Forward Cameron Kuzma fed an open Poul Andersen on the offensive rush, who ripped a wrist shot past the Tigers’ goalie.

Head coach Brent Kisio said his team played a great game to earn their first win at home.

“I think our guys came out hard. Five-on-five, I was proud of how we worked with a quick turnaround. We got back at three o’clock in the morning last night. Our guys didn’t use it as an excuse; Medicine Hat was fresh, and our guys showed up to play,” Kisio said.

Kisio said despite the Tigers having a more veteran lineup, he wanted his team to “look them in the eyes.”

“We want to see what teams do when we look them in the eyes,” he added.

Another big reason why the Rebels earned the win was the play of goaltender Matthew Kondro, who stopped 28 of 29 shots faced. The Rebels also outshot the Tigers 35-29.

“I liked our goaltending this weekend. Kondro was excellent tonight, and Salisbury was great yesterday. We did a good job defending in front of them, and they made the big saves when they have to,” Kisio said.

On special teams, the Rebels held the Tigers scoreless on two power-play opportunities, but they also failed to capitalize on five power plays. Kisio said they’ll work to improve their power play and added that they know tonight wasn’t good enough.

With the win, the Rebels improve to 2-1-0-1 and are sitting in third place in the Eastern Conference standings.

Next up, they’ll head out on a three-game road trip through Saskatchewan beginning with a stop in Prince Albert on Wednesday for a matchup with the Raiders.
