Hamilton’s hat trick leads Rebels to first win of the season

The Red Deer Rebels earned their first victory of the regular season on Friday.

Rebels captain Beckett Hamilton scored a hat trick in his season debut, and goaltender Nathan Salisbury stopped 19 of 22 shots in a 4-3 win over the Lethbridge Hurricanes on the road. Rebels also had the edge in shots 43-22.

In the first period, Hamilton opened the scoring less than four minutes in.

Hamilton just returned from Colorado Avalanche training camp this week and rifled a shot past the netminder. His first of the year came following a drop pass by Poul Andersen that set up Hamilton with a golden opportunity at the top of the left circle.

The Hurricanes found the equalizer with 9:06 remaining in the opening frame.

Hurricanes captain Owen Berge fired a shot that beat Salisbury on the power play.

However, nearly two minutes later, Hamilton scored his second of the game on the power play. He fired a shot through traffic that went under the arm of the goalie and into the back of the net.

The Hurricanes then tied it at two with a shorthanded marker by Kai Anderson in the final few minutes.

Lethbridge carried that momentum into the second period as forward Dayne Beuker scored their second power-play goal of the night. His go-ahead marker came just 2:12 in.

With 5:41 to go in the second, the Rebels made it 3-3 following a goal from rookie forward Chace Turchak.

His first-ever WHL goal came on the power play. Turchak tipped the puck past the goalie as he drove to the net on the offensive rush off the feed from Andersen.

Hamilton then completed the hat trick just a few minutes later with a shorthanded goal after he forced a turnover in the Hurricanes’ own end.

In the third period, the Rebels tightened up on defence to hold off a big push by the Hurricanes to maintain their lead and secure the 4-3 victory.

On special teams, the Rebels scored two power-play goals on 10 opportunities; meanwhile, the Hurricanes went two-for-five on the man advantage.

Next up, the Rebels will host the Medicine Hat Tigers at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 26, at the Centrium.
