Red Deer RCMP remind motorists to be alert as students return to class

Motorists in Red Deer are being reminded to stay alert as students return to class.

Classes are in session across the board effective Aug. 31, with some students (at St. Patrick’s Community School) already back.

“The excitement of a new school year, along with early mornings and busy routines, can increase distractions behind the wheel. Now is not the time to be complacent. With increased traffic around schools, pedestrians, cyclists, and school buses are all sharing the road. Busy drop-off areas can become congested quickly and drivers are reminded that a few extra seconds can help prevent a collision,” RCMP say in a release.

“Children can be unpredictable near roadways, especially when entering or exiting schools and school buses. It is crucial to remain vigilant and aware of bus stop procedures and passing laws.”

Plan ahead and leave earlier, especially if you’re route takes you through school zones
Avoid distractions! Put down the phone! Pay close attention for children in and around crosswalks, intersection, and drop off zones.
Be prepared for the unexpected, children particularly young ones, can be very unpredictable and can dart into traffic
Always stop for a school bus with it’s red lights flashing

Students

Use Crosswalks or designated areas to cross roadways
Avoid distractions and pay attention to your surroundings
Remove headphones and put away your phones
Make eye contact with drivers and make sure all traffic has stopped before stepping out onto roadways
Walk on the sidewalk, or if unavailable, walk well off the side of the road facing the traffic

Caregivers

Use designated drop-off lanes for your children and obey traffic rules in school parking lots
Obey no-parking, no-stopping areas and follow directions from school staff or traffic-control personnel
Teach your child how to cross the street safely and direct them to the closest designated crosswalk
When possible, have children exit onto the sidewalk or curbside, rather than into traffic
Give yourself plenty of time and be patient
