Michelle Baer acclaimed as Alberta NDP candidate for Red Deer-South

It’s official.

Michelle Baer has been named the Alberta New Democratic Party (NDP) candidate for the electoral district of Red Deer-South ahead of the 2027 provincial election.

The news came over the weekend when she was acclaimed during a nomination ceremony hosted by the Red Deer-South NDP Constituency Association at the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame.

Baer, who is a longtime solicitor for the City of Red Deer, wrote in a Facebook post that she’s excited to announce her campaign to be the next MLA for Red Deer-South.

“To all the folks who attended the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame, and to those who were with us in spirit, thank you. Your support means so much! Thank you for believing in me in this nomination,” she wrote in the post. “The real work starts now. Watch this space for more about why I want to serve you in this way and how you can help. Let’s do something extraordinary. I’m ready. Are you?”

Baer was the Alberta NDP candidate for Red Deer-South during the 2023 provincial election, but fell to MLA Jason Stephan of the United Conservative Party of Alberta. Stephan won with 13,469 votes to Baer’s 9,976 votes.

According to Elections Alberta, the next provincial election is scheduled for October 18, 2027.
