These drones are meant to provide aerial oversight during police calls. However, a unique feature allows direct communication between drone pilots and community members.

For example, during the first week it was introduced, pilots deployed the drone to an assault complaint where the suspect fled on foot. They were able to track the suspect from the air, leading to the suspect’s arrest.

They also responded to a call that allegedly involved weapons. Once the drone was deployed, they were able to determine there were no weapons involved and there was no threat to public safety.

“This is a prime example of how the DFR can provide updated and essential information to responding officers, as well as increase public safety,” said Staff Sergeant Jay Jestings, adding that they were able to attend various calls on Canada Day.

The DFR program continues to operate in conjunction with the RCMP’s pre-existing Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS).
