Red Deer RCMP Drone as a First Responder Program already assisting on calls

Red Deer RCMP officially launched its Drone as a First Responder Program last month.

They launched it on June 18, which police say marked a significant step in modernizing public safety and enhancing service for Red Deer.

This was done in partnership with Red Deer Municipal Policing Services, Red Deer Emergency Services, K Division RCMP Air Services, and our local RCMP drone pilots.

The program is now operating Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Drones take off from the north and south Red Deer RCMP detachments and are flown remotely by pilots from control centers.

These drones are meant to provide aerial oversight during police calls. However, a unique feature allows direct communication between drone pilots and community members.

For example, during the first week it was introduced, pilots deployed the drone to an assault complaint where the suspect fled on foot. They were able to track the suspect from the air, leading to the suspect’s arrest.

They also responded to a call that allegedly involved weapons. Once the drone was deployed, they were able to determine there were no weapons involved and there was no threat to public safety.

“This is a prime example of how the DFR can provide updated and essential information to responding officers, as well as increase public safety,” said Staff Sergeant Jay Jestings, adding that they were able to attend various calls on Canada Day.

The DFR program continues to operate in conjunction with the RCMP’s pre-existing Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS).
