Alberta Crop Report: August 21, 2026

Aug 21, 2026 | 4:33 PM

The Central Region, along with the South, is showing better than the rest of the province in terms of the percentage of major crops rated good-to-excellent.

That is according to the Aug. 21 Alberta Crop Report, issued by the Government of Alberta and the Agriculture Financial Services Corporation (AFSC).

Central Region sits at 70.2 per cent in that regard, with the South at 79.3 per cent.

In the three more northern regions, the highest percentage is 48.6.

The Central also saw a significant increase in surface soil moisture ratings this week, up 14 per cent to 52 per cent good-to-excellent.

“While many crops in the South and Central regions were too advanced in their development to realize significant yield benefits from these showers, some later-seeded crops or ones still podding could see benefit,” the report states.

Central (and South), however, are on the lower end of surface soil moisture ratings — Central at 52 per cent and South at 50, though both are well above the five-year averages of 43 and 27 per cent, respectively.

The Peace Region, leading the way, is at 79 per cent, well above the five-year average of 48 per cent.

Region Two: Central (Rimbey, Airdrie, Coronation, Oyen)

• While combining is yet to start in the Central Region, desiccating is well underway, and many crops will also soon be ready for swathing. The mix of warm weather and showers has been helping both heads and pods fill.

• Sub-surface soil moisture (5-year average) is rated as 12 (30) per cent poor, 45 (30) per cent fair, 35 (36) per cent good, 5 (3) per cent excellent and 3 (1) per cent excessive.

• Tame hay growth conditions (5-year average) are rated as 14 (29) per cent poor, 51 (32) per cent fair, 35 (36) per cent good, and 0 (3) per cent excellent.
