The Mustard Seed will celebrate its 10-year anniversary in central Alberta next week.

On Monday, July 13, from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., there will be a celebration at The Mustard Seed Community Support Centre located at 6002 54 Avenue in Red Deer.

The event will include a free barbecue, live entertainment, family-friendly activities, and inspiring stories that reflect a decade of work in the region.

“The Mustard Seed has been a vibrant part of Red Deer for the last 10 years. We have helped to care for the most vulnerable men, women, and children in Central Alberta and have created opportunities for individuals and groups to give back and be a part of something larger than themselves. We have worked to address food insecurity, provide overnight shelter, safe daytime spaces out of the elements, and have helped countless people achieve their goals on their own individual journeys,” Laura Giesbrecht, Senior Director of Food Services.

It all started in 2016 when the Loaves and Fishes Benevolent Society transferred its assets to The Mustard Seed. Since then, the organization has supported families and individuals experiencing homelessness and poverty throughout the region. The Mustard Seed officially opened on July 4, 2016.

Over the past decade, Mustard Seed has offered shelter, daily drop-in, employment, housing services, and many activities for community members to take part in. In that time, they have recorded a total of 94,994 nightly shelter check-ins.

The Mustard Seed’s School Lunch Program also provides lunches to over 500 children daily. This program has been running for over 21 years to support children across Central Alberta. In 2025, over 92,000 school lunches were provided to more than 50 schools in and around Red Deer.
