Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre says party is focused on affordability during Red Deer stop

Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre was in Red Deer on Monday, where he presented a message of improving affordability in Canada.

He, alongside Red Deer MP Burton Bailey, received a tour of a grain fractionation facility at Permolex located in the Edgar Industrial Park.

Poilievre said in a speech to those in attendance that the conservative party’s top priority is affordability.

“People can not afford to pay the bills after 10 years of this liberal government. Taxes are up, inflation’s up, crime is up, and you’re paying the price for it all,” he said.

“After a year of Mark Carney, we have the worst food price inflation of any country in the G7. This is partly because of the continued industrial carbon taxes, the unrealistic ban on plastic packaging for our food, and the deficit spending that drives up inflation.

“Our mission is to bring down all of those costs, to get rid of the industrial carbon tax, to end the inflationary liberal spending, to bring back the purchasing power of our money, to unblock our resources so we can sell more of our oil and gas to the world and boost the purchasing power of our dollar, and to relieve our businesses of the incredible burden of red tape that holds them back.”

According to a description on the company’s website, Permolex is a one-of-a-kind facility in North America that is a flour mill, but also a gluten plant and an ethanol plant that can produce multiple grades of alcohol.

The facility opened in 1998 and produces bakery flour, vital wheat gluten, different grades of alcohol and livestock feed.

Poilievre said the federal government has refused to recognize that businesses like Permolex are low-carbon producers.

“They need to make the readjustment to recognize how much you reuse and how clean and efficient you are here. It just blows my mind that you’re able to supply all of your electricity and be a self-reliant operation completely off the grid,” Poilievre said.

Poilievre added that he plans to work with Permolex to raise this issue with the federal government to ensure the local business receives its proper revenue for the energy they produce.

“Our mission is to make this once again a country where you can afford a great life, afford a home, afford food, and afford gas, so that you can power your family and your life,” he said. “We want to bring back the promise of Canada, which I grew up with right here in Alberta. Simple promise that you work hard, you get a great life to live in a safe street and build a beautiful future.”

Poilievre said the party is fighting to end all gas taxes for the rest of the year and to end the GST on resold vehicles.

“You should only pay the tax once. One and done,” he said.

He also called for an end to the industrial carbon tax, which he said hurts the oil and gas sector as well as the cement, concrete, steel, and aluminum industries. He said it also indirectly drives up the cost of food and housing.

“Our belief is that a dollar left in your hands is always more powerful than a dollar in the hands of the politician or bureaucrat who taxed us. We will keep fighting for you every day and in every way. Fighting for a stronger Alberta within a united Canada. So, keep the hope, keep the fight alive, and keep working.”

Poilievre did not make time to talk with local media members.
