Red Deer Legion fundraiser to support motorcycle ride for blind children

Jun 17, 2026 | 10:05 AM

The Royal Canadian Legion #35 (Red Deer) is inviting the entire community, member or not, to a fundraiser it is hosting on July 2 in support of the 2026 Ride for Vision & Valour.

The ride supports the Military Police Fund for Blind Children (MPFBC).

Riders are going from Victoria, B.C., to Blueberry Mountain in Alberta, and back to Victoria, from June 24 to July 6. Blueberry Mountain is an area about an hour north of Grande Prairie.

Riders are set to arrive in Red Deer on July 2, with the fundraiser going from 5:30 to 9.

The Ride for Vision & Valour supports the cause started by Col. James Riley ‘Big Jim’ Stone.

According to the ride’s website, Stone immigrated to Canada from Great Britain prior to WWII, settling in the Blueberry Mountain/Grande Prairie area.

In 1939, he enlisted and served Canada in the Second World War.

He went on to serve again in the Korean War, commanding the 2nd Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry.

While in Korea, and serving as head of the Military Police, Stone’s daughter Moira was diagnosed with eye cancer, leading to her blindness. This led to his connecting with organizations supporting blind children.

In 1957, he started raising money and created what is now the MPFBC.

Col. Stone passed away in November 2005 at the age of 97, but this ride keeps his legacy alive.

More about the ride can be found here.
