Red Deer city council adopts 2026–29 term direction

Red Deer city council has set its priorities for the next four years.

On Tuesday, the council adopted the 2026–2029 council term direction, which the city says will guide council’s leadership, decision-making and oversight, and align the administration’s work to support Red Deer’s needs and future growth.

The term direction, the city added, sets a path for the city’s work in service to the community and identifies the priorities that will shape efforts over the term.

“Council’s Term Direction gives us a clear foundation for the work ahead,” said Mayor Cindy Jefferies, in a media release. “It reflects where we will focus our efforts over the next four years and how council and administration will work together, alongside partners and community, to build a strong future for Red Deer.”

The adopted priorities are as follows:

  • Fiscal Discipline: Planning for today and tomorrow
  • Safe & Supported Neighbourhoods: Build confidence in the places Red Deerians share
  • Economic Growth & City Pride: Building a Red Deer people and businesses choose
  • Housing that works for Red Deer: Supporting choice, stability and affordability

The city explained that fiscal discipline is a city-led priority focused on planning responsibly and the remaining priorities will be advanced through shared work with partners and community.

The priorities were determined during council’s discussion and review of community needs, emerging opportunities, and the work already underway across the organization. The process helped identify where council will focus its efforts over the next four years.

“The document will help guide planning, investment and organizational effort throughout the term, while recognizing that meaningful progress on many priorities depends on collaboration,” the city stated in the release. “It also provides a shared path for decision-making and helps focus work on the priorities that matter most to Red Deer.”
