Local filmmakers win Telly Award for best micro-budget project

Two Red Deer filmmakers are the recent recipients of a prestigious Telly Award.

The Tellys recognize excellence in video and television across all screens, according to their official website.

Representing central Alberta as winners during the Telly Awards’ 47 season are Dave Dinan and Dean Busch, who met during the formative years of the Central Alberta Film Festival.

About three years ago, Busch shares, he had an idea for a film support club, which he’d ultimately call Central Alberta Media Productions Association, or CAMP.

“Our project is Doc Z, a comedy web series free to watch on YouTube. It’s about a half-Canadian, half-American doctor who gets commandeered by a wacky police chief to help during a zombie apocalypse. Doc escapes with two unlikely companions, Nurse Trish and Deputy Taft, and the three try to avoid the outbreak by running to Canada in Doc’s motorhome,” Busch shares about their creation.

“Our first episode landed 25,000 views in two weeks. The entire show is shot in the Red Deer area with all local crew and talent, with the exception being two close buddies of mine, Gil Allen and Morgan LeBlanc.”

The series even features a cameo by longtime Red Deer radio host Peter Michaels.

Doc Z (pronounced Zee) won the Gold award for Specialty-Best Micro-budget (Under $10,000) project.

“This is a very exciting award to win; it has a different judging system whereby industry professionals look at your work, decide if it’s good enough, then pass it on to the public for final judging,” Busch adds.

“But a win does not guarantee you a Gold, as that depends on the percentage of votes you get compared to the other entrants; only three per cent of category winners get Gold. And considering the Tellys get over 14,000 submissions a year, we are blown away.”

The series can be watched on YouTube, and below is a sneak peek:
