Lacombe reminds riders to keep pedal-less dirt bikes off the roads

May 28, 2026 | 4:54 PM

The City of Lacombe is asking users of electric dirt bikes, and others, to be mindful that they are illegal to ride on roads, sidewalks, pathways, in parks, and other public spaces.

According to the city:

Not all electric-powered bikes are treated the same under provincial legislation. Bicycles and power-assisted (electric) bicycles are permitted, provided they have operable pedals, can be powered by human effort, and meet provincial requirements. These are considered bicycles and may be used on roads and pathways in accordance with traffic rules.

However, they say, electric dirt bikes and similar vehicles which do not have pedals or cannot be powered by the rider are not permitted.

These vehicles do not meet the definition of a power bicycle under provincial legislation and are generally classified as off-highway vehicles. Under the City of Lacombe Traffic Bylaw (Bylaw 506), no person may operate an off-highway vehicle within the city except in very limited circumstances, such as loading or unloading the vehicle or where specific authorization has been granted (Section 6.9).

Electric dirt bikes can present increased risk in urban settings because they are:

• Capable of high speeds, often exceeding what is appropriate for shared spaces

• Heavier and more powerful than bicycles, increasing the risk of injury in a collision

• Quiet, making them difficult for pedestrians and drivers to hear

• Not equipped or designed for road use, including interactions with traffic and pedestrians

Operating an off-highway vehicle within city limits is an offence under the Traffic Bylaw and may result in a fine (Schedule B).
