Olds-Didsbury-Three Hills MLA named to Premier Smith’s cabinet

May 21, 2026 | 10:37 PM

Rookie MLA for Olds-Didsbury-Three Hills, Tara Sawyer, was part of Premier Danielle Smith’s cabinet shuffle on Thursday.

Sawyer, who was elected in a byelection last summer, will now serve as Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation.

In a social media post, Sawyer had this to say:

“Agriculture in Alberta has a profound legacy of supporting families, strengthening rural communities, and feeding the world. I’m proud to take on this role and look forward to working alongside Alberta’s farmers, ranchers, processors, and producers to support a strong and resilient agriculture sector.”

A farm owner herself, Sawyer served as chairperson for Alberta Grains from August 2023 until the byelection last year.

She was also a director for more than five years with Grain Growers of Canada, and served as chair for Alberta Barley from 2020-2023.

In a statement, Alberta Grains said today it welcomes Sawyer’s appointment, noting her deep, first-hand knowledge of the industry.

“We congratulate Minister Sawyer on her appointment and look forward to continuing to work together to support Alberta farmers and strengthen the province’s agriculture sector,” said Alberta Grains chair Scott Jespersen.

“Her experience as both a farmer and industry leader will bring valuable perspective to the role at an important time for Alberta agriculture.”

Alberta Grains is a farmer-directed, not-for-profit organization that represents Alberta’s wheat and barley farmers.

Elsewhere, Red Deer-North MLA Adriana LaGrange was migrated from the preventative health portfolio to the hospitals portfolio.
