Scott Block Theatre to change hands again

The operation of Red Deer’s historic Scott Block Theatre is changing hands again.

It was announced Wednesday that theatre operations will transition to Artifact Properties Ltd., a local real estate company which owns the building at 4816 50 Avenue.

The company notes it will continue as such until further notice, while ownership explores new opportunities for operational management.

The Scott Block Theatre has been operating in downtown Red Deer for two decades, and has become a go-to venue for theatre, dance, improv, and music, among other types of gatherings.

Last fall, it was announced the Arts Council was taking over operations from Creative Twist Inc., which had steered the ship since 2022.

That opportunity came about amid a controversy around municipal funding for community culture organizations.

The Arts Council said at the time that the ability to generate revenue and support local artists would ensure a stable home for creative work, which aligns with the council’s mission and long-term vision for arts locally.
