Red Deer Polytechnic to cut 47 positions by the end of May

Red Deer Polytechnic has announced they’ll abolish 47 positions in an effort to balance its budget.

The institution said in an emailed statement that the individuals whose positions are cut will receive this notification through individual meetings now through the end of May.

“To ensure long-term sustainability, Red Deer Polytechnic is transitioning to a leaner polytechnic operating model,” as stated in the email.

“This transition will unfortunately result in the abolishment of 47 positions across all employee groups, including Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE), Faculty Association of RDP (FARDP) and Exempt staff.

“These position abolishments, combined with identified opportunities to grow revenue from new and existing sources and implement cost-saving measures, will enable RDP to return to a balanced budget by 2027-28.”

RDP added that through the transition, they remain committed to providing an excellent student learning experience and advancing its 2030 Strategic Plan: Productivity and Social Impact.

“The institution continues to focus on growth through increased domestic enrolment and expanded partnerships and programming, with domestic enrolment (including credit and apprenticeship programming) already on the rise.”

rdnewsNOW reached out to the AUPE and the FARDP for comment, but did not receive a response in time for publishing. Their comments will be added to the story if received.

In March 2026, rdnewsNOW reported that RDP will run a $12 million deficit over the next two years; and in April, suspended intake into three programs as a result of the ongoing budget planning process for the 2026-27 fiscal year.
