911 call over fast-food dispute leads to impaired driving suspension

Red Deer RCMP seized the vehicle of a 38-year-old Sylvan Lake man following a late-night 911 call last Sunday.

Police say on April 19, shortly after 4 a.m., they received a 911 call from a man who asked for assistance at a downtown fast-food restaurant in Red Deer. He had reported that staff had demanded he leave, though he stated he hadn’t done anything wrong and had driven 35 minutes for a burger.

On arrival, the RCMP found the male caller inside a vehicle in the parking lot, and after speaking to him, he said he didn’t like the way the restaurant staff were speaking to him.

He also admitted to being intoxicated and told officers he was waiting for the staff to come as he still wanted a burger.

“Red Deer RCMP remind all drivers to plan ahead and arrange a designated driver if you have consumed alcohol or other intoxicating substances. There is no room on our roads for impaired drivers,” as stated in a media release.

Police then spoke to staff who said they told the man they couldn’t serve him because their systems were not working.

An investigation, police say, led them to determine the man was the driver of the car, and after demanding he provide a breath sample, he refused.

He was issued an Immediate Roadside Sanction Fail and vehicle seizure under the Traffic Safety Act.
