Red Deer middle schooler student threatened with knife downtown

Mar 25, 2026 | 4:51 PM

Red Deer RCMP are investigating after a child was threatened with a knife in downtown Red Deer the morning of Tuesday, March 24.

RCMP say the incident happened around 7:30 a.m. There are varying reports about the precise location of the incident, though it’s understood to have happened somewhere in the vicinity of Sorensen Station and City Hall.

As of 5 p.m. on March 25, there’s been no arrest, and RCMP were unable at this time to share a description of a suspect or suspects.

According to a same-day letter to parents from Central Middle School, which is downtown, near both City Hall and the bus station, the student had their backpack stolen. Once the student arrived at school and told staff, RCMP were called.

“While this appears to be an isolated incident, we are taking it very seriously. School administration will be present at Sorensen Station after school today to support students and to help ensure a safe environment. We have also requested that the RCMP’s Youth and Community Action Team (YCAT) be present, and are working with the City of Red Deer to enhance security,” the letter reads.

The City of Red Deer tells rdnewsNOW that Red Deer Transit and the City are working with RCMP, but adding security, specifically to Sorensen Station, remains to be determined, given the difference of opinion on where the incident occurred.

“We recognize that incidents like this can be unsettling. Counselling support is available at the school for any students who need it, and we encourage families to reach out if additional support would be helpful,” the school letter continues.

“We encourage families to speak with their children about personal safety when travelling to and from school. Reminders such as walking in groups, staying aware of surroundings, and avoiding engagement or confrontation with others is important.”

They add that students and parents are encouraged to inform school administrators about any concerns that arise when travelling to and from school.
