RDPSD students learn all about french language and culture

The Red Deer Public School Division reported that students from École Barrie Wilson spent a week learning about many voices of the French-speaking world as their school celebrated La Semaine de la Francophonie.

The school focused on the global reach of the French language, highlighting the backgrounds of its French Immersion Staff.

Teachers and staff represented French-speaking communities from France, Côte d’Ivoire and Madagascar, as well as Quebec and Alberta.

Throughout the week, classes took part in a variety of activities designed to build excitement around the language and culture.

This included a school-wide bingo challenge that encouraged classrooms to complete different French-themed activities such as listening to a bilingual read-aloud of Zoe the Superdog/Zoe la superchienne.

“Celebrating Francophonie Week helps students see that French is a living, global language,” said Principal Diane Wade in a media release. “Our staff bring incredible cultural perspectives to the classroom, and this week gave students a chance to explore those connections while having fun with the language.”

Food and music were also part of the celebration as students enjoyed fresh crepes, courtesy of Cassie and Travis White, owners of ABC Country Restaurant.

Students also participated in Manie Musicale, a friendly competition inspired by a March Madness-style bracket that introduced students to French-language music from around the world.

The celebrations wrapped up with a performance by Les Bucherons, who performed for the entire school in the gym. Followed by the performance, students enjoyed a traditional tire d’érable treat inspired by a sugar shack celebration.
