AB Fish & Wildlife share fish handling tips

Mar 22, 2026 | 9:00 AM

Alberta Fish and Wildlife is offering tips for anglers, as large pike prepare to spawn.

Fish and Wildlife says large pike are “especially vulnerable to hooking mortality,” and safe catch and release practices are important for conservation efforts.

A list of tips was provided by Wildlife Enforcement:

  • Keep fish in the water: Limit time out of the water. Keep pike in the water while removing the hook.

Use proper tools: Use pliers or a de-hooking tool to safely remove hooks.

    • Avoid touching sensitive areas: Never grab a fish by the gills or eyes.

Support the fish properly: Hold fish horizontally, supporting its body and tail.

Revive before release: Gently move the fish back and forth to get water flowing over its gills before releasing.

For anyone wanting additional guidance, a short five-part video series is available on the My Wild Alberta website, along with other information.
