Alberta Chambers survey reveals separation talk bad for business

Mar 12, 2026 | 10:12 AM

Alberta’s chambers of commerce say talk of the province potentially quitting Confederation is bad for business.

Their remarks come after a recent Alberta Chambers of Commerce survey of members and investors found more than half of participants say the separation issue is affecting the provincial economy.

Shauna Feth, the chamber’s chief executive, says businesses have also expressed that planning for the future has become difficult.

Deborah Yedlin, with the Calgary Chamber of Commerce, says investors are waiting to see which direction the province goes.

Jobs Minister Joseph Schow says he appreciates the feedback and the government has its eye on the ball.

He also blames investor uncertainty on the policies of former prime minister Justin Trudeau.

Doug Griffiths from the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce says leaders have to think long term and putting the blame on Trudeau doesn’t make sense.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has said she supports Alberta staying in Canada, but her government made rule changes last year to make it easier for a separation question to be put to a vote.
