Hundreds take part in presentation and conversation on disinformation and Alberta separation

Approximately 150 people made the trip through the snowstorm on Tuesday evening to attend a public conversation on disinformation and Alberta separation.

The presentation, organized by the Council of Canadians Red Deer Chapter, was given by Mount Royal University professor Duane Bratt at the Golden Circle in Red Deer.

Norm McDougall, chair of the Council of Canadians Red Deer Chapter, said it went well and attendance was excellent, despite the blizzard-like conditions.

“We were just delighted,” he said. “The speaker drove up from Calgary, and we talked to him, suggesting we postpone, but he had none of it, and he came up. He delivered an outstanding presentation.”

Those who were unable to make it to the presentation will be able to watch it online tomorrow on the Forever Canadian-Central Alberta Facebook page.

On Thursday afternoon, they posted on the page that the video would be posted on Friday at some point, as they were busy at work.

McDougall explained that Bratt, who’s a regular commentator on political events, presented lots of information, facts, and data to back up his arguments, particularly on the idea of separation.

“He did a great job. The crowd was very pro-Canada, of course, but there were some people there who were trying to catch him off guard. He laid it on the line, and he was able to handle all of the difficult questions and present a very good argument,” McDougall added.

One point, McDougall said, that Bratt presented was that separation was serving the United Conservative Government as a distraction from bigger issues, such as our healthcare system.

“The session achieved its goal,” McDougall said. “Everyone who was there with an open mind left with quite a bit of information to discuss with their friends, neighbours, and family.”

Next up, Bratt will deliver another presentation called Take Back Alberta: Separatism and the Future of Provincial Politics, presented by Burman University in Lacombe.

It will take place on Monday, Feb. 23, at St. Andrews United Church at 7 p.m. However, the event is officially sold out.
