Red Deer RCMP ticket drivers at check stops during impaired driving campaign

Red Deer RCMP have released the results of five check stops held last week during its holiday season impaired driving campaign.

From December 11-12, Red Deer RCMP Traffic Services, along with Red Deer City Community Peace Officers (CPOs), held the check stops throughout the city where they checked 260 drivers for impaired driving by way of drugs or alcohol.

Police say that multiple vehicles attempted to evade the check stops, creating unsafe and dangerous situations for other drivers. For example, one driver lost control and popped a tire on a curb while trying to avoid the check stop. As a result, the driver was issued their second impaired driving suspension and a summons for a third offence of no insurance.

In addition, a Class five GDL driver drove into a parked Community Peace Officer vehicle, which caused minor damage with no injuries. The motorist was issued a zero-tolerance 30-day suspension and a ticket for careless driving.

Mounties say four violation tickets were also given to Class seven drivers who were driving without supervision, and violation tickets for unregistered vehicles and making a U-turn at an intersection.

However, the RCMP aren’t finished conducting check stops, which they say will continue through the holiday season.

“RCMP would like to remind drivers that it is never safe to conduct a U-turn in a controlled intersection or attempt to steer around emergency vehicles with flashing lights,” as written in a media release. “The Red Deer RCMP want to remind drivers to plan ahead and secure a safe, sober ride to ensure everyone gets home safely.”
