Christmas Hoedown to support Sunnybrook United youth and young families

Nov 3, 2025 | 12:03 PM

Youth and young families at Sunnybrook United Church will benefit from an upcoming concert.

The concert features Canadian Fiddle Champion Scott Woods, and goes at 7 p.m., Nov. 18 at the church (12 Stanton Street).

Specifically, 100 per cent of proceeds will benefit the church’s First Third Ministry, which supports people in the first third of life.

“Since this ministry started last May, we have created an inclusive kids church program for families on Sunday mornings; we have started a support group for moms to find community; and we have been growing connections within RDP to offer programs for students, as well as young adults in the community. More programs are coming for youth and intergenerationally as this community grows,” shares Aleesha Neal, First Third spokesperson.

“Our events for students include a warm meal provided by the congregation and an activity to foster connection, joy, and rest from the stresses of post-secondary, and our student staff members are building connections with student groups (like Pride on Campus) and staff to bring inclusive, interfaith groups to RDP.”

Neal adds that they have a ‘mama’s circle’ which utilizes volunteers who offer play and nurture for the children; all the while moms are able to share about what’s happening in their lives, as well as offer support to each other.

“Kids church allows young people to explore faith in a way that honours diversity, social justice, and reconciliation” Neal adds. “Co-creating safe spaces of belonging is at the core of everything we offer.”

The concert will also feature champion fiddler Kendra Norris, renowned guitarist Steve Piticco, and champion stepdancer Leo Stock, as well as Gary and Nadine Boles.
