Matthew Gard scores overtime winner against the Broncos

The Red Deer Rebels halted a three-game slide after a 4-3 overtime victory over the Swift Current Broncos on Wednesday night.

In front of an excited crowd of 2,049 fans at the InnovationPlex in Swift Current, Rebels forward Matthew Gard scored just over a minute into overtime to lift Red Deer to victory.

Rebels netminder Chase Wutzke made 30 saves on 33 shots; meanwhile, Broncos goalie Aiden Eskit made 21 saves on 25 shots.

With the win, the Rebels improved their record to 3-8-0-1 and are now in 10th in the Eastern Conference standings.

The Broncos scored the lone goal just over six minutes into the first period when forward Anthony Wilson knocked the rebound from the slot.

The Rebels answered exactly seven minutes into the second period off the stick of forward Ty Coupland, who scored against his former team.

He fired a one-timer shot from the left circle that beat the goaltender on the power play, assisted by defenceman Keith McInnis.

The Broncos retook the lead later in the second frame with less than four minutes left when defenceman Peyton Kettles lit the lamp with a hard shot from the right circle.

In the third period, forward Jaxon Fuder capitalized on a one-timer from the right side of the net on the power play off a pass from Samuel Drancak.

Near the midway point of the third, the Rebels took their first lead of the game, scored by rookie Owen Shadrick. The American forward found the back of the net on the offensive rush with a shot that rang of the post and in.

The Broncos tied the game 3-3 with approximately six minutes later when Wilson notched his second of the night.

Both teams were unable to break the tie until Gard’s goal early in overtime.

Next up, the Rebels will return home on Friday for a matchup with the Regina Pats at the Centrium, followed by another home game on Saturday against the Calgary Hitmen at 6 p.m.
