Annual Red Deer charity checkstop coming to an end, but ‘Coats 4 Kids’ goes on

Oct 7, 2025 | 10:54 AM

The long-running Coats 4 Kids Charity Checkstop, hosted by the Central Alberta Crime Prevention Centre (CACPC), will no longer take place.

For more than 10 years, every October, the event has drawn motorists to Taylor Drive between 32 and 43 Streets to drop off warm winter-wear as well as monetary donations.

Those went to the CACPC’s Coats 4 Kids campaign.

“With much of the funding we have traditionally relied on no longer available, each fundraiser we organize has become essential to continuing the work of the Crime Prevention Centre, says Denise Rambow, executive director.

“We learned at the end of August that Charity Checkstop will not be able to run, which marks a significant shift for our organization.”

A statement from The City of Red Deer explains why this is occurring:

The City no longer supports charity check stops on public roadways based on two key factors:

  • Safety: Roadway events pose significant risks, particularly on higher-speed roads. Even with enforcement vehicles and emergency lighting, the risk of collisions remains too high to ensure volunteer and public safety.
  • Legal Authority: Current legislation does not provide authority for non-enforcement-related check stops on public roadways, making these events non-compliant.

“Historically, these events have provided meaningful support to local charities, so we understand the impact of this change,” the city continues.

“To help, the city is encouraging alternative approaches, such as hosting events in high-visibility private parking lots that are easy to access and fully voluntary. These locations can still attract strong community engagement without the risks associated with roadway activities.”

The city has reached out directly to organizations to discuss options.

Though the checkstop won’t happen as it has in the past, Rambow says the CACPC is still going to collect donations for its Coats 4 Kids campaign from Oct. 7-11 at their offices (4311 49 Avenue, Red Deer). The office is attached to the Baymont Hotel

They are open Tuesday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with extended hours on Thursday until 6:00 p.m. On Saturdays, they’re open from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The centre is closed Sundays, and can accept donations during sale hours and Monday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Donations will also be collected at the Red Deer Christmas Bureau through Oct. 17, as well as at Classic Cleaners, Village Dry Cleaners, The Coverall Shop, and Mustang Laundry.
