Meet Red Deer’s goats responsible for weed control this Friday
This Friday, Red Deerians will get the opportunity to meet the goats responsible for sustaining the city of Red Deer’s parks.
On Friday, Oct. 10, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Kerry Wood Nature Centre, the public can learn about the program and meet the animals who’ve played a role in weed control of the community’s green spaces for over a decade.
According to the City of Red Deer, the goats have led the way in managing invasive species such as Canada thistle, toadflax, and leafy spurge. These are hard to control, even with chemicals.
The animals, which graze on these invasive weeds under the care of herders, have provided a safer alternative to herbicides, and their work has reduced the need for chemical use, note city officials. The city says this initiative also supports pollinators, improves ecosystem health, and aligns with the city’s environmental master plan.
