Seniors for Climate to hold rally at City Hall Park Saturday

Sep 19, 2025 | 4:17 PM

The Seniors for Climate initiative will hold a rally this Saturday, Sept. 20 in Red Deer called Draw the Line in hopes of raising awareness of climate change, peace, democracy, and a better future for Canadians.

Over 85 communities across Canada will take part but the rally in Red Deer will be held at 1:30 p.m. at Red Deer City Hall Park.

The event, which is sponsored by The Council of Canadians, is focused on building a unified movement for change.

Susan Strong, a member with The Council of Canadians and SFC event organizer, said the rally will be focused on climate change following another summer of wildfires, smoke, excessive heat, and droughts in Canada.

They’ll be joined by 350.org, an international environmental organization that raises awareness about climate change.

They’ll also express concerns about food security, income inequality, affordability, housing, and healthcare. At the rally, they’ll also advocate for peace with wars going on around the world.

“Between 350.org and Seniors for Climate, we came up with the theme, draw the line for people, peace, and the planet,” she said.

Friends of Medicare executive director Chris Gallaway will be in attendance to talk about healthcare and Rashpal Sehmby, a representative of the Canadian Labour Congress, will speak about workers rights and the effect of climate change on workers. Concerned citizens for the environment will also get an opportunity to speak.

She explained there’s a wide variety of concerns that people care about including the environment and how it will affect our future.

“This event has been advertised far and wide… We’re hoping that we’ll have a large crowd,” she said. “We’re hoping to make it fun, peaceful, and motivating. We hope people come and wonder what can we do to make things better.”

There will be refreshments available for those in attendance and there will be live music.
