Lacombe council approves Indigenous mural for south wall of City Hall

Jul 17, 2025 | 12:57 PM

An Indigenous mural will go up on the south side of Lacombe City Hall following approval by city council this week.

According to the city, the mural will portray a full-colour natural landscape before arrival of the first settlers, while highlighting Indigenous travel routes which passed through the Lacombe area.

“Lacombe’s murals are renowned throughout Alberta for their artistic beauty and unique view into our shared past,” Mayor Grant Creasey said. “The addition of this mural to City Hall will enhance the exterior of this public facility and will be a vivid reminder of the history of our region.”

A request for proposals went out previously, and the chosen artist is Gordon Wesley, who has created art for other municipalities and organizations, such as Okotoks, the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies, and Banff National Park.

Per the city:

The approved design is titled “Eyes of The Wisdom” and features a bison and Indigenous Elder (traditional dancer) observing the landscape from above. These two figures represent the knowledge keepers that gathered medicine from the land. The sky above the landscape in the design is an evening sunset overlooking the Medicine Hills, which is a sacred location within the major travelling route through Lacombe and Lacombe County.

Funding for the mural comes from the city’s Percent for Art budget.
