Town of Sylvan Lake to move ahead with Phase 4 of Pogadl Park development

Jun 12, 2025 | 4:40 PM

Sylvan Lake town council has directed administration to move ahead with Phase 4 of the Pogadl Park development.

The phase will include the development of parking lot three, a synthetic turf field, four pickleball courts, and the operations yard without the building for an estimated cost of $7.4 million.

The phase also includes the development of two grass soccer fields, contingent on grant funding to cover the cost estimated at $918,000.

The project is scheduled for design in 2025 with construction set to take place in 2026.

The amended motion was carried unanimously during the regular town council meeting on Tuesday.

This followed approximately an hour of deliberation between council members and administration.

Council brought it back to the table on Tuesday after the Committee of the Whole provided council with an update on the Phase 4 design and construction project on May 7. Following that update, council requested additional information regarding construction options for the phase.

On Tuesday, administration returned with four options, recommending council moves forward with the fourth option which included the development of parking lot three, two grass soccer fields, four pickleball courts, an outdoor hockey rink and the operations yard without the building for an estimated cost of $4.9 million.

Council considered that option but in the end multiple councillors wanted to see the synthetic turf field included in the phase.

“At the end of the Committee of the Whole meeting, we had a conversation to decide what we felt were the most important pieces and I think the majority of us felt the turf field was a piece that needed to happen as quickly as possible,” said Councillor Jas Payne.

“To me, the turf field is what’s going to set Pogadl apart. Right now it’s what draws people to Lacombe, it’s what draws people to Great Chief Park. I feel like we’re missing out on a revenue opportunity and we’re kicking a can down the road even further. I do think being fiscally responsible is important, but when I look at this, once again I see an outdoor rink, formerly we didn’t want an ODR when we talked about this in Committee of the Whole.”

Payne continued by saying he wants to see pieces that are missing such as the turf field rather than more of what they already have such as another outdoor rink.

The Pogadl Park project first began in 2016, after members of the Pogadl family donated 20 acres of land to the Town of Sylvan Lake.

They made the donation in the name of Ed and Glenda Pogadl for a sports and recreation park. Construction began in 2017 and was expected to take over a decade to complete.
