A year later, RDSO looking at brighter future as it closes out 2024-25 season

The final performance of the season for the Red Deer Symphony Orchestra, entitled Symphonic Storytelling, is May 24.

The show takes place at the RDP Arts Centre, and promises to take audience members through Tchaikovsky’s evocative Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture

There will also be new arrangements of beloved hits by Joni Mitchell, Gordon Lightfoot, Bachman-Turner Overdrive, Ian Tyson, and more.

Longtime conductor and music director, Claude Lapalme, says there are very few tickets left for the season finale.

Looking back to a year ago when he called the future of RDSO “grim,” he reflected on how grateful he is for the community support this year, and for the fact the horizon is now much brighter.

“The fact the City redistributed the money for us to use for operations has been great. For next year, I’ve now been able to put a season together where a couple of the concerts will have more rehearsals, and not all, but most will have a larger orchestra,” he shared.

“That’s a really good start for the reconstruction of the orchestra, to get it back to pre-COVID days. We’re very grateful that happened, and what’s also been great is the attendance.

“I think people trust us for a good time.”

As for next year, Lapalme is secretive with big announcements to come, but he says there’ll be Tchaikovsky, there will be Beethoven, and there shall be a new pops concert featuring something extra fun.

“We’ve done a good job of promoting. We’ve shown we can be adaptable, and we’ve noticed that the demographics have changed. The audience is getting to be a little younger, and that’s very encouraging,” he said, noting the need to still be prudent financially and look for more funding.

“The future is looking better, but we have to keep our eyes on the prize. We still need more money. We need more sustainability, but right now, the trajectory is much better than a year ago.”
