LAUNCH OF ENDOWMENT CAMPAIGN

Red Deer Symphony Orchestra’s barenaked truth put front and centre in ‘If We Had a Million Dollars’ show

If you’re a pre-wrapped sausages kinda person, you should know that the penultimate main series concert of the 2024-25 season is quickly approaching for the Red Deer Symphony Orchestra (RDSO).

The show, dubbed ‘If We Had a Million Dollars,’ takes place March 29 at the RDP Arts Centre, and will revolve around the theme of the Barenaked Ladies iconic song, ‘If I Had $1,000,000.’

The title of the show is a nod to the RDSO’s quest to become more financially sustainable, plus the fact it’s been around 38 years.

That’s life, in a nutshell for the RDSO, which will stage this show with just 12 musicians, a sign of its financial reality.

‘If We Had a Million Dollars,’ which will primarily feature music from Bizet’s timeless ‘Carmen Suite,’ is also the kick-off to a year-long endowment campaign. The ultimate goal is to grow the organization’s endowment fund with the Community Foundation of Central Alberta from $300,000 to $1,000,000.

For all those reasons, this concert marks an important moment for RDSO, says executive director Matthew Whitfield.

“One of the features of all our concerts this season is that at least one of the pieces is Canadian content which our music director and conductor, Claude Lapalme, arranged specifically for that performance,” says Whitfield.

“After the advocacy campaign with the city which resulted in us getting that operational funding, we’re in a position where we actually can look toward the future. This campaign is a big, big first step in making ourselves more financially independent and sustainable.”

Tickets to all RDSO events are available online at www.rdso.ca, by phone at (403) 346-0021, and in-person — if you have a reliant automobile — at the RDSO office.
