RCMP give update on investigation into shooting in Maskwacis

May 6, 2025 | 2:59 PM

The Alberta RCMP have provided an update to an officer-involved shooting that took place on April 24 in Maskwacis.

This comes after authorities responded to the call that day to assist the Edmonton Police Service with their investigation.

Mounties say there were a number of people who’d allegedly fled from Edmonton and ultimately exited a stolen vehicle into a home on Montana First Nation.

Not long after, police say two suspects exited the home and were arrested but the third person, who was believed to have a firearm, remained inside. As a result, the Alberta RCMP Emergency Response Team were called in for assistance.

After 10:50 p.m., a confrontation between RCMP and the suspect began with at least one officer discharging their service weapon.

No officers were injured but soon after, the home caught fire and no one was seen leaving.

In compliance with legislative requirements, ASIRT was directed to conduct an independent investigation.

In the latest update, police say the RCMP, ASIRT, and fire investigators conducted a thorough search of the burned residence but determined no people were located inside.

Police also continue to work to identify and locate the suspect that was believed to be in the residence.

RCMP have further determined no member of the public was injured during the police operation. ASIRT was originally directed to investigate the potential harm to a civilian from the shooting and the fire at the residence. However, since no civilian was harmed in the incident, ASIRT’s involvement is no longer needed but the RCMP will continue to investigate.

Police say there is no additional information available about this incident at this time.
