Town of Ponoka to pick up yard waste on May 20

May 4, 2025 | 8:00 AM

The Town of Ponoka’s annual spring cleanup and collection of compostable yard waste will begin later this month.

On Tuesday, May 20, crews will make one trip down each back alley in Ponoka to pick up yard waste in excess of what fits in your green cart.

This includes grass clippings, leaves, weeds, and branches no longer than five feet. Branches longer than five feet will no longer be picked up.

The town is asking residents to place all yard waste in a pile in their back alley no later than Monday, May 19.

Those who do not have a back alley, should pile their yard waste at the front of the property near the curb where it is visible for pickup.

The yard waste should not be bagged and if it is, it will not be picked up in an effort to avoid contaminating the compost pile at the Town’s Waste Transfer Station. Other items that will not be picked up includes tree stumps, rocks, construction material, wood, household waste, and pet excrement.

Residents can also bring compostable yard waste free of charge to the town’s Waste Transfer Station. If the yard waste is bagged, citizens will have to open the bags and empty the contents onto the town’s organics pile.
