COLLABORATIVE PROJECT

Lacombe city council approves 100 Tree Planting Project

Jan 16, 2025 | 2:43 PM

Lacombe’s city council has approved the City’s participation in the 100 Tree Planting Project, a collaboration with St. Andrew’s United Church.

The decision was made in the Jan. 13 regular council meeting to approve the allocation of resources outlined in a memorandum of understanding.

The goal is to plant 100 trees within two municipal reserve locations on the west end of Woodland Drive in Lacombe. Ideally, this should enhance environmental sustainability, foster community engagement and beautify municipal areas.

The cost and installation of the trees will be covered by the church and grants that it’s applied for, and maintaining the trees will be covered by the City for an estimated cost of $32,000 over the first three years.

The project is expected to have the following service level impacts:

  • Site preparation: Park staff will need to oversee the delivery of trees and some soil preparation, which may involve temporarily reallocating resources from regular maintenance tasks.
  • Planting day support: On planting days, parks staff will provide oversight to ensure plans are followed, and to provide technical assistance.
  • Ongoing maintenance: Additional workload will be incurred for maintenance like watering, especially during the initial establishment period of one to three years.
  • Operational adjustments: Some regular maintenance activities may need to be reprioritized or delayed to accommodate project demands.

City officials say these impacts will be manageable with current staffing levels.

While the church is responsible for procuring and planting the trees, the City is expected to take on the watering responsibility by June 10. Watering is set to occur weekly in the first year, bi-weekly in the second, and tri-weekly in the third.

A community open house and design workshop is expected to take place on Feb. 1, 2025, and planting should be taking place in the first week of June.

The full memorandum of understanding is available in the council agenda.
