Rebels win streak comes to an end in loss to Wheat Kings

Dec 6, 2024 | 9:05 PM

The Red Deer Rebels four-game win streak came to an abrupt halt on Friday night in a 5-1 loss to the Brandon Wheat Kings.

In front of 2,636 fans at Westoba Place, Dominik Petr and Quinn Mantei scored three points each in the one-sided victory.

Both teams struggled on the man advantage with the Wheat Kings scoring a powerplay goal on four attempts and the Rebels with one on five attempts.

The Rebels went down 3-0 after the first 20 minutes that started with back-to-back goals by forward Dominik Petr. His first came on the powerplay just 2:35 into the game followed by his second five and a half minutes later.

The Wheat Kings extended their lead in the final five minutes of the opening period off the stick of defenceman Quinn Mantei assisted by Petr.

Just over one minute into the second period, Brandon forward Caleb Hadland beat rookie goaltender Peyton Shore to lead 4-0.

The Rebels coaching staff had seen enough and made a goalie change swapping out Shore, who made nine saves on 13 shots, for Chase Wutzke. He made 18 saves on 19 shots.

Midway through the period, things went from to bad to worse when Brandon forward Matteo Michels added to their lead.

However, Red Deer finally broke the shut out 2:13 into the final period when defenceman Hunter Mayo hammered in a point shot for his 11th goal of the year on the powerplay.

The Rebels continued to push to the end but were unable to buy another goal.

With the loss, Red Deer remains in third place in the Eastern Conference standings with a 14-11-1-2 record

Next up, they’ll wrap up their road trip through Saskatchewan and Manitoba on Saturday in Swift Current against the Broncos at 6 p.m.

They’ll then take on the Lethbridge Hurricanes on the road next Friday, Dec. 13 at 7 p.m. before hosting the Kamloops Blazers on Dec. 14 for the annual toque and teddy bear toss game at 7 p.m.
