Red Deer mourns loss of local athlete and swim coach

Local athlete and Red Deer Marlins Summer Swim Club swim coach, Chloe Becher, has passed away.

Becher was just 20-years-old when she passed away with family and friends by her side on Friday, Nov. 8.

According to her obituary posted by Parkland Funeral Home, she died as a result of a medical emergency she had just days before.

A funeral service was held Nov. 20.

“Chloe was a vibrant, talented, kind, young woman,” as written in her obituary.

“She was a natural leader, extremely hard worker, generous gift giver, and a fierce competitor. Chloe was a planner and an organizer – she made plans and looked forward to time spent with friends and family.”

She was born in Edmonton but moved to Red Deer after attending kindergarten through Grade 2 in Drayton Valley.

She grew up attending Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools and graduated from Notre Dame High School in 2022.

Upon graduating, Becher moved to Paxton, Massachusetts where she attended Anna Maria College on a partial hockey scholarship for two years.

She moved back to Red Deer earlier this year and was continuing her studies at Grant MacEwan University in Edmonton.

After swimming for the Marlins from 2013-2020, she coached the next generation of swimmers at the club from 2022-24.

She also had a love for hockey playing on multiple teams in Red Deer Minor Hockey before wrapping up her minor years with the U18 AAA Red Deer Sutter Fund Chiefs in 2022.

“Chloe touched many lives in her short time with us. She was easy to love and loved deeply,” as written in her obituary.

Chloe is survived by her parents Ryan and Lorrie, her brother Rhett Becher, and her boyfriend, William Mrazek.

The Red Deer Marlins released a statement on Facebook saying, “With the heaviest and saddened hearts we share the news of the loss of one of our dearest Marlins coaches. Please keep her parents and family in your thoughts and prayers as they go through this difficult time.”

The Red Deer Catalina Swim Club also offered their condolences adding, “Our thoughts go out to our summer swimmer friends.”

Meanwhile, Red Deer Minor Hockey said they were saddened to hear of the tragic passing of Chloe.

“Our thoughts and well wishes are with the Becher family, friends, past teammates and coaches, and everyone who’s lives touched Chloe over the years. She was a valued member of our community that will be greatly missed.”
