Man sentenced in Red Deer stabbing

An eight-year prison sentence has been handed to a man charged in a fatal stabbing in downtown Red Deer nearly two years ago. 

River Roan, 20, was convicted on one count of manslaughter on May 19, 2026, and also given a firearm prohibition during sentencing. 

However, he was also given a time credit of 759 days, reducing his 2,920-day sentence to 2,161 days, just shy of six years left to serve. 

Roan was previously scheduled for a preliminary hearing in Red Deer Court of Justice from Sept. 14-18, 2026, and initially charged with second-degree murder in the death of 43-year-old Anthony Spiller of Red Deer on Dec. 28, 2024.
