Red Deer RCMP promote railway safety with Operation Life Saver

Oct 11, 2024 | 10:55 AM

Red Deer RCMP are impressing upon people to be safer around railway crossings.

Recently, members of the detachment’s traffic services and downtown patrol units, as well as peace officers, took part in Operation Life Saver at the Hwy 11A rail crossing.

More than 2,100 North Americans are killed or seriously injured each year as a result of collisions at rail crossings and trespassing on railway property, RCMP note.

“You are 30 times more likely to be killed in a collision with a train than in any other motor vehicle [collision],” says Sgt. Brian Herrick with Red Deer RCMP Traffic Services.

“A single impact could cause a derailment, and if a freight train is involved, hazardous materials being transported could pose serious risks to the surrounding community. Always stay alert, limit distractions, and be aware of your surroundings when approaching rail crossings.”

Safety tips include:

  • Stay alert at rail crossings: look both directions and listen, limit vehicle distractions
  • Slow down and be prepared to stop at all rail crossings
  • Leave your vehicle if it stalls or gets stuck on rail tracks
  • Don’t use tracks as a shortcut or recreational path
  • Use designated rail crossings
