Red Deer County opts to help fund Penhold Waskasoo school playground

Oct 10, 2024 | 3:31 PM

Red Deer County council has unanimously approved a request from the Penhold School Parent Council for financial support to install playground equipment at the new Penhold Waskasoo school.

A new elementary school for Penhold is in the process of being constructed and is expected to accommodate 560 students, with the ability to expand to 725.

The quote the Parent Council received for the playground was $551,000 (plus GST) for both the equipment and installation. Although installation is planned for 2025, deposits are due by December 2024.

The ask of Red Deer County was to contribute $45,000 to the project, which was unanimously approved, with the funds to be drawn from the Municipal Reserve Account, in the Oct. 8 regular council meeting.

The Penhold School Parent Council is hoping to provide a playground that can accommodate the projected 725 students, although the Town expects the opening population in 2025 to be about 550.

The Government of Alberta provides grant funding of up to $250,000 per school to support the construction of a playground for new or replacement schools. The project was denied a Community Facility Enhancement Program Grant as it already received provincial funding.
