“The people of Taber will ultimately decide what’s best for our community,” reads a media release from the municipality.

Mayor Andrew Prokop says a change in designation could have some positive impacts.

“Economic growth opportunities and benefits for the betterment of our community are important considerations and are very possible,” says Prokop. “We most certainly look forward to any input you may have through this public engagement process.”

Other potential benefits, as outlined in a Town of Taber FAQ page, includes attracting businesses and investments, enhanced infrastructure, access to grants and funding, boosting tourism, improving public services, increased real estate development and enhanced regional influence.

The Government of Alberta removed the 10,000 population threshold to become a city a few years ago. The 2021 federal census showed Taber was home to 8,862 residents at the time, which would make it the smallest city in the province.

The Town is anticipating its population will continue to grow as it has experienced a boost in agricultural production in recent years. They say more skilled workers and immigrants will be needed to meet the demands of farms and other businesses.

The Town of Taber has launched an online survey that will be open until October 4, 2024. More public engagement opportunities will be announced in the coming days.

A timeline for when a decision will be made is not known at this time.
