Sundre’s Tristan Baumung earns BCHL scholarship

Aug 30, 2024 | 2:18 PM

The BCHL has announced five recipients of its annual scholarship program.

They include Sundre native and blueliner Tristan Baumung who plays for the Spruce Grove Saints.

Baumung will receive $2,000 towards his education at Red Deer Polytechnic.

“Our league prides itself on our focus on education, making sure our athletes are setup for success once they graduate from the BCHL,” said league Commissioner Steven Cocker. “We would like to congratulate these five deserving recipients and wish them the best as they continue to pursue their hockey and academic goals.”

The other four are:

Alexis Cournoyer – Prince George Spruce Kings (Brock University)
Ranvir Gill-Shane – Victoria Grizzlies (University of Toronto)
Trey Patterson – Chilliwack Chiefs (Mount Royal University)
Zander Stewart – Powell River Kings (Brock University)

Winners were selected based on their academic record, their stated future career and education goals, and their time spent in the BCHL.

Baumung, played 154 games for the AJHL’s Olds Grizzlys between the 2019-20 and 2023-24 seasons, and then joined the Saints.

The Saints are one of five teams who earlier this year defected to the BCHL.

For Spruce Grove, Baumung has played 33 games.

He also played minor hockey in the AMHL for the Red Deer Chiefs U18AAA squad, primarily in 2019-20, and played for the Red Deer Rebels U15 team, as well as the Red Deer Northstar Chiefs U16 team.

This scholarship program is supported by Rogers, the league adds.
