JUNE 7 OPENING NIGHT

Artribute Art School students showcase talent in June gallery

Jun 4, 2024 | 3:48 PM

Residents are invited to join the students of the Artribute Art School on June 7 for the opening showcase of their latest gallery, My Kid Could Make That.

From 5-7 p.m., family of the students and other residents are welcome to drop-in at the Red Deer Arts Council Community Gallery and take in the creativity, and participate in a small artist trading card activity if desired.

“It’s a big boost of confidence for them. It’s pretty special to be able to show your artwork in galleries, and often when you make art at home or make it in school it just ends up on your fridge, so this is kind of a big special thing for them,” says Erin Boake, owner of Artribute Art School.

Boake took over running the school six years ago. Its main service is the art classes it offers to youth aged 5-18 from September to June, however summer classes and adult classes will be available this year too.

The school offers kids, “the opportunity to express themselves and to use lots of different materials they might not get to use at school or at home. We have access to pottery, a pottery wheel, kilns, oil paints, all sorts of different things that can be hard to come by in schools with more limited budgets,” says Boake.

The gallery name, My Kid Could Make That, pokes fun at the kind of comments and attitudes often heard at professional galleries.

“It’s kind of a joke because in the painting world, especially abstract painting, you often hear people say, ‘My kid could make that,’ when they dont really understand what goes behind it. We just thought it was kind of a funny play on words because our kids make really amazing work.”

While the official opening night is on June 7, the works of art are currently on display and will remain until June 28, 2024.
