doubled in federal budget 2024

Increase to volunteer fire fighter tax credit lauded by Penhold fire chief

May 10, 2024 | 9:19 PM

Penhold’s fire chief is applauding the recent doubling of the Volunteer Fire Fighters Tax Credit, part of the federal government’s recently released 2024 budget.

Sean Pendergast says the credit, which can be claimed on one’s taxes, is now worth $6,000, but advocacy continues to raise it to $10,000, which he says would be in line with inflation.

“We’re losing thousands of volunteer fire fighters every year across Canada [due to leaving the department],” says Pendergast, who notes that over the last few years, national numbers have dropped from 120,000 to around 90,000.

“Usually, these folks have their own jobs, lives and family that they have to balance like everyone else, but on top of that, they put in a minimum two hours training per week, and then they service emergency calls whenever they’re in, all times of day; they get up, they go and they deal with the emergency.”

About 70 per cent of communities in Canada have fire departments that are at least partially volunteer-based.

In Penhold, the department has 35 volunteer members, around the highest the town’s ever had.

To qualify for the credit, a member must put in 200 hours per year, says Pendergast, who is part of the Answer the Call committee, an initiative of the Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs.

The committee’s primary objective has been to push for the credit to be increased.

In addition to Pendergast’s involvement with the advocacy related to the tax credit, he was recently appointed by Health Minister Adriana LaGrange to the Alberta Emergency Medical Services Standing Committee (AEMSSC).

“For me, it’s about continuous improvement as the province grows and our system grows,” he says.

“It’s nice to have people on the ground providing input. Health care is where we spend the most amount of our tax dollars, and we need to focus on continuous improvement.”

The committee’s scope is to provide advice for the Minister of Health on issues and solutions related to Alberta’s Emergency Medical Services system.
