Brush fire in Red Deer a reminder of already dangerously dry conditions

Apr 9, 2024 | 4:32 PM

A brush fire in Red Deer on Monday that thankfully turned out to be minor serves as a reminder to residents and visitors that supreme caution is needed in the weeks and months ahead.

Red Deer Emergency Services confirms that a brush fire occurred around 4:50 p.m. on Monday in a forested area just off the west side of Gaetz Avenue, going down the hill from Village Mall. It was visible from the roadway.

The cause is unknown, but that doesn’t mean it can’t serve a greater purpose.

“When crews arrived, they found a small brush fire, about 20 square feet in size with a couple of people trying to put the fire out. The fire was quickly extinguished by the fire fighters,” says Chris Kearns, deputy chief.

“The public is reminded that we are anticipating a dry spring and summer again this year and that everyone can do their part to prevent the risk of brush and grass fires.”

Tips from RDES to avoid these types of fires:

  • Do not throw out cigarettes into easily combustible materials, such as vegetation, potted plants, landscaping material, peat moss, dried grass, leaves, or similar items.
  • Do not discard smoking materials out vehicle windows.
  • Ensure fire pits are properly monitored and fully extinguished.
  • Learn more about the proper use of fire pits by reviewing the rules and regulations in the City’s Fire Permit Bylaw (https://www.reddeer.ca/media/reddeerca/city-government/bylaws/Fire-Permit-Bylaw.pdf)
  • Monitor the Fire Ban status by visiting www.albertafirebans.ca when planning outdoor activities.
  • Report any suspicious fire activity by calling 9-1-1.
