Red Deer Polytechnic Athletics weekend in review

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Hockey team got RDP Athletics off to a winning note on Thursday night as they shut out the Olds College Broncos 6-0. But on Friday night, it was a different story. The teams combined went 0-5 as they all faced off against very tough opponents.

Queens Volleyball, and Kings and Queens Basketball all finished the weekend with back-to-back losses against the Briercrest College Clippers. Kings Volleyball bounced back into the win column on Saturday afternoon, however, with an impressive three-straight set victory over the Clippers.

As for the Kings Hockey team, they finished their week off with a win against the NAIT Ooks to split their home-and-home series this past weekend.

Volleyball

Briercrest College Clippers (11-6) at Queens (12-5)

• Friday, February 2 | 6 pm

• Saturday, February 3 | 1 pm

The Queens got off to a tough start this past weekend. The Polytechnic would open up the match with a 25-23 set victory but would drop the next three to close out the match (25-23, 25-27, 22-25, 20-25). Outside-hitter Jaiden Ferguson (Business Administration) was awarded the player of the match after finishing with 12 kills and nine digs.

After dropping the first two sets of the match (22-25, 25-27), the Queens bounced back to tie it up at two sets (25-20, 25-18) apiece but the Clippers came out strong in the fifth set to take the match with a 15-6 final. Outside-hitter Emma Holmes (Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences) was awarded the player of the match in her final home game as a Queen. She finished with 16 kills and eight digs.

Briercrest College Clippers (13-4) at Kings (14-3)

• Friday, February 2 | 8 pm

• Saturday, February 3 | 3 pm

Like the Queens, the Kings followed suit by defeating the Clippers in the first set but would fall in the next three to lose the match in four sets (25-21, 25-27, 26-28, 19-25). Setter Tom Wass (Open Studies) had an outstanding match as he finished the loss with an incredible 40 assists.

The Kings were able to bounce back into the win column on Saturday afternoon after defeating the Clippers in three straight sets (25-21, 25-17, 25-23). Outside-hitter Noah Carlson was back to his regular self and finished with a match-high 20 kills. Libero JJ Graham (Business Administration) was awarded the player of the match in his final home game as a King. He had seven digs in the win.

Hockey

Queens (16-4) at Olds College Broncos (6-16)

• Thursday, February 1 | 7 pm

In their lone game this week, the Queens held the Olds College Broncos scoreless for their third consecutive shutout with goaltender Tora Ward (Open Studies) earning two of those three shutouts as she stopped all 21 shots she faced on Thursday evening. Defence Kyla Hansel’s (Pharmacy Technician Diploma) goal with five minutes left to go in the first period ended up being the game-winner in the 6-0 victory.

Forward Jenna Sellen (Bachelor of Education) scored a pair of goals on her way to being named the player of the game for the Polytechnic. Defence Alesha Santos (Bachelor of Science in Nursing), forward Alli Soyko (Bachelor of Education), forward Rylee Mepham (Bachelor of Education) and Hansel each finished with two points in the win.

Kings (12-8) vs NAIT Ooks (12-8)

• Friday, February 2 | 7 pm in Red Deer

• Saturday, February 3 | 6 pm in Edmonton

The Kings got off to a great start as they were able to go up 4-0 in the early stages of the second period with three of those goals coming in the first period. But the Ooks answered back with six of their own to walk away with the 6-4 victory. Forward Jacob Wozney (Bachelor of Education) picked up a pair of goals in the first period and he was later awarded the player of the game.

The Kings’ offence came out to play yet again on Saturday as five different skaters scored for RDP in the team’s 5-1 win in Edmonton to regain second place in the conference. Forward Nolan Doell (Bachelor of Education) scored one of the five goals and assisted on the opening goal. He was named the player of the game following the victory.

Basketball

Queens (15-3) at Briercrest College Clippers (10-7)

• Friday, February 2 | 5 pm

• Saturday, February 3 | 12 pm

The Queens got off to a tough start on their road trip to Caronport, SK. RDP had the lead after the first quarter but the rest of the game was all Clippers as they took control and closed out the game with a 71-63 victory. Guard Sandra Garcia-Bernal (Educational Assistant) led the offence with 14 points and 10 rebounds to complete the loss with a double-double.

For the first time this season, the Queens dropped two in a row as they fell at Briercrest College 67-66. RDP came back in the second half and forward Peighton Melton (Bachelor of Arts in Multidisciplinary Studies) even hit a buzzer-beating three-point in the fourth quarter but it was not enough. Garcia-Bernal was awarded the player of the game for the second night in a row as she led the offence with 17 points.

Kings (11-7) at Briercrest College Clippers (10-7)

• Friday, February 2 | 7 pm

• Saturday, February 3 | 2 pm

It was a rough Friday for all teams at RDP. With the Kings Basketball loss, the teams went a combined 0-5 to start the weekend. Like the Queens, the Kings had the lead after the first quarter, but it was all Clippers for the remainder of the game as they extended RDP’s losing skid to three games with a 93-80 victory. Centre Jose Mauro (Business Diploma) finished the game with a team-high 21 points in the loss.

The Kings fell in their fourth consecutive game with a loss against the Clippers on Saturday afternoon. Despite having the lead in the first half, the Clippers came out strong in the second and walked away with a 90-87 victory. Guard Davin Eskins-Isidore (Kinesiology Fitness and Health) was awarded the player of the game who dropped 14 points off the bench.
