Red Deer Polytechnic is proud to announce The RDP Athletes of the Week:

1. Sandra Garcia-Bernal

Hometown: Valencia, Spain

Educational Assistant (5th year)

Guard Sandra Garcia-Bernal put her name in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) record book this past weekend against the Lethbridge College Kodiaks. With her nine steals in the Queens 70-55 win over the Kodiaks on Saturday afternoon, the Spanish guard now has 354 steals in 92 career games. This places her in sole possession of the ACAC Steal record which was previously held by Shea-Lynn Noyes of the NAIT Ooks who finished her 110-game career with 350.

Garcia-Bernal was named the player of the game on Saturday as she was one steal away from completing a triple-double as she finished with 20 points and 11 rebounds alongside her nine steals. On the season, the fifth-year guard is averaging just over 11 points per game while shooting an impressive 45 per cent from the field. The Queens undefeated record and 10-game winning streak came to an end on Friday evening with the Kodiaks taking game one of the doubleheader.

RDP will be back in action this weekend with two roads in Medicine Hat as they prepare to battle with the Rattlers. Friday’s game will start at 6 pm and a day later, tip-off will be at 1 pm.

Congratulations Sandra and we look forward to seeing how far you extend your steals record in the final few games of the season!

1. Colby Nemeth

Hometown: Red Deer, AB

Bachelor of Commerce (3rd year)

Outside-hitter Colby Nemeth and the Kings earned two huge victories this past weekend as they defeated the top two teams in the North Division. On Saturday evening, RDP welcomed the Keyano College Huskies to town for a rematch of one of last year’s championship semi-final matches. The Kings fell down 2-1 in the match but stormed back to take the last two sets and win the match in five. Nemeth was a key component to his team’s victory this past weekend as he led the offence with 19 kills which were a season-high for him. He was later named the Kings player of the match.

A day later, the Polytechnic managed to knock off the Lakeland College Rustlers in four sets. The Rustlers came into the match as the number two seed in the North Division. For the second consecutive night, Nemeth led the offence with 16 kills. Coming into these two matches, Nemeth was averaging just eight kills per match with an average of 2.4 kills per set which makes these two of his best offensive matches this season.

In the 12 matches he has played, the Red Deer native has 111 total kills and 18 service aces.

The Kings will host the Medicine Hat College Rattlers for a two-game set at home this weekend. Both matches on Friday and Saturday will start 20 minutes following the Queens match which starts at 6 pm on Friday and 1 pm on Saturday.
