Red Deer’s Nate Danielson has been traded from the WHL’s Brandon Wheat Kings to the Portland Winterhawks.

The trade was announced Wednesday night as the league’s trade deadline came and went.

Danielson just returned from representing Canada at the World Juniors in Sweden.

A first round pick, 5th overall, for Brandon, Danielson has collected 176 points in 171 games for the Wheaties, posting a career high 78 points last season.

In an interview on CHL.ca, Wheat Kings GM Marty Murray said to move an ‘unbelievable’ player like Danielson was very difficult, adding that the 19-year-old deserves a spot on the team’s Wall of Fame.

Winterhawks President, GM and Head Coach, Mike Johnston, said on the team’s site that he’s confident Danielson will have a significant impact down the stretch run.

As of Jan. 11, the Winterhawks sit second in the WHL’s Western Conference, and first in the American Division. Danielson has 12 goals and 26 points through 26 games this season.

Danielson was selected 9th overall by the Detroit Red Wings in the 2023 NHL Draft.
