Rebels lose 4-2 to Tigers on home ice

Dec 27, 2023 | 9:56 PM

The Red Deer Rebels brought a four-game winning streak into the Peavey Mart Centrium Wednesday night for a tussle with the Tigers and came out with a 4-2 loss against Medicine Hat in their first game back after the Christmas break.

The two teams met only once previously this season with the Tigers again, doubling the Rebels 4-2 in Red Deer on Sept. 29, 2023.

The Tigers would open the scoring in this one at 12:28 of the first period when Dru Krebs scored his second goal of the season, unassisted, beating Rebels netminder Rhett Stoesser to put the visitors up 1-0.

But it was Red Deer who outshot Medicine Hat 11-5 in the opening 20 minutes, despite trailing the Tigers 1-0 heading into the first intermission.

In the second period, Red Deer tied it up 1-1 when Mats Lindgren scored his fourth of the season, on the power play at 15:24, beating Tigers goaltender Zach Zahara. The tying goal came with help from Hunter Mayo and Ollie Josephson following a hooking penalty to Medicine Hat’s Oasiz Wiesblatt 15 second earlier.

The second period would end tied 1-1 with Red Deer outshooting Medicine Hat 17-6, for a two-period total of 28-11 after 40 minutes.

Medicine Hat would regain their lead in the third period, however, when Shane Smith scored his 18th of the season at 3:22, with Andrew Basha assisting on the play to make it 2-1 Tigers.

The Rebels then tied it again though when Jeramiah Roberts scored his first-ever WHL goal at 14:13, on the power play, with assists from Ollie Josephson and Jhett Larson to make it 2-2. The goal came following a tripping penalty to Medicine Hat’s Gavin McKenna.

But the euphoria of that tying goal was short-lived as the Tigers Oasiz Wiesblatt scored his 11th of the season at 15:40 to make it 3-2 Medicine Hat. Reid Andresen and Gavin McKenna chipped in the helpers.

A penalty shot awarded to the Tigers soon afterwards though was stopped by Rhett Stoesser, keeping the Rebels just one goal back of the visitors.

The delay of game penalty assessed to Medicine Hat which resulted in the penalty shot, led to Red Deer pulling Rhett Stoesser from between the pipes at 16:57 to give the Rebels a 6v4 matchup and an empty net in hopes of tying the game.

But the Tigers Hayden Harsanyi lit the lamp one last time, scoring on the empty net at 18:19 to put the game away 4-2.

This time the Tigers outshot the Rebels 8-6 in the third period, but it was Red Deer outshooting Medicine Hat 34-19 overall.

On special teams, Medicine Hat went 1/2 on the night, while Red Deer went 1/6 with the man advantage.

Three Stars:

2. Ollie Josephson, Red Deer. 0G, 2A, +/- 0
